Job Description: The prime objective of the First Microfinance Agency (FMA) is to contribute to poverty alleviation and economic development through the provision of sustainable financial services to the poor and the underserved.

The intern will:

  • Assist and actively participate in the existing microfinance operations including loans, deposits, and targeting specific customer segments such as women;
  • Help to support and coordinate expansion Programs and branch deployment where necessary; and strengthen reporting, MIS and controls and identify specific indicators to track the level of female borrowers and identify ways to improve lending to women.

Job Description: The prime objective of First Microfinance Agency (FMA) Kenya is to contribute to poverty alleviation and to economic development through the provision of sustainable financial services to the poor and the underserved. FMA Kenya will conduct a market study on financial services with the aim of developing recommendations and implementation support for product development, customer approach, and cooperation with customer partnership groups specifically looking at women as part of this target population.

The intern will:

  • Provide support on key planning and implementation components;
  • Examine products and delivery mechanisms and assist in making them effective and efficient; and undertake a survey of female clients to determine if the products offered are suitable to their needs and identify other products they would require.

Job Description: APMAS is a national level resource organization and its mandate is to enhance quality and the sustainability of the self - help movement in India. APMAS supports Strengthening of Women Self Help Group Federations engaged in microfinance & livelihood promotion in India through research, documentation, dissemination and policy advocacy and support in spreading and managing financial literacy activities in APMAS’s operational area.

The intern will:

  • Design tools for study on Self Help Group federation;
  • Collect data in collaboration with APMAS network members;
  • Analyze data (both qualitative and quantitative);
  • Write reports, prepare policy briefs and articles for publication in journals;
  • Coordinate workshops and conferences; and Develop a strategy for Self Help Group federations.

Job Description: The IMM Fellow will assist and actively participate in FMCC’s existing microfinance operations and participate in activities as follows: providing support on key planning and implementation, examining products and delivery mechanisms, assisting in improving reporting systems at all levels and undertaking a survey of female clients to determine if products offered meet their needs. Job Description: AKHS, I focuses on the promotion of effective and sustainable healthcare for underserved populations, with special attention to women and children in specific regions of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. The thrust of these core programs is on reproductive and child health, communicable and non- communicable disease (NCD) awareness and screening for NCDs (diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, oral and cervical cancer, and obesity), mental health, and health insurance communicated through educational sessions.

The intern will be involved in designing tools for impact assessment or needs analysis; designing training modules for program implementation; conducting training and awareness sessions; and conducting research activities, etc.

Overseas Host Organization: ARAVALI
Job Description: ARAVALI is an organization initiated by the Government of Rajasthan to promote innovation in development and greater collaboration between the Government and Voluntary Agencies. ARAVALI recently created a Core Group on Nutrition within the organization to highlight the importance of preventive interventions in improving the status of community health in Rajasthan. It is in this context that ARAVALI plans to develop a program for ensuring the nutritional security of rural households, especially in tribal Districts of Rajasthan.

The intern will be involved in conducting a desk and field review of the status of nutrition and food security in Rajashthan, and subsequently, designing intervention and support packages for improved nutritional and food security.

Fellowship Title: Community Health Fellow (IDM)

Location: Mombasa, Kenya
Overseas Host Organization: Community Health Department (CHD), Aga Khan Health Services, Kenya
Job Description: CHD’s mandate is to contribute towards improving living conditions and opportunities, and to help relieve the burdens of ignorance, disease and deprivation. CHD works in partnership with community based health and social organizations, NGOs, and the Ministry of Health to provide support from the dispensary level to the national level. CHD contributes to sustainable improvements in the health of women of childbearing age and children under five years of age by focusing on neonatal and infant health in three disadvantaged districts of the Coast Province in Kenya

The intern will be involved in critically analyzing the existing implementation strategies through development of a sustainability framework; conducting and documenting a case study to establish the effectiveness of current implementation strategies/interventions; and strengthening the existing monitoring and evaluations frameworks.

Fellowship Title: Regional Documentation/Communications and Gender Fellow (IDM)

Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Overseas Host Organization: Aga Khan Foundation, East Africa
Job Description: AKF, East Africa conducts a variety of programming across a broad range of sectors, including health, education, rural development and civil society strengthening. Gender equality, environment, HIV/AIDS and pluralism are cross-cutting themes across all of AKF's projects and programs.

The intern's main role will be to support communications and documentation activities across the unit and support the similar activities of AKF(EA)'s 20 projects, with a specific focus on strengthening print and electronic communications and documenting best practices that highlights its interventions with a specific focus on gender equality and mainstreaming initiatives across the agency and its projects. This will include reviewing program activities, collecting and analyzing information and indicators relating to issues around gender and producing a range of documentation and communication material to highlight this. In addition, the intern will support the development/implementation of a regional gender audit and support in research of tools and approaches which can be used by projects and programs in the region.

Job Description: The Nation Media Group (NMG) was established in 1959 by His Highness the Aga Khan. His mission was to give an independent voice to the Kenyan people. NMG started as a Kenyan newspaper publishing company but has expanded its operations over the years to cover the entire East African region with a diversified product portfolio. NMG aims to relentlessly inform, educate, and entertain its readers, viewers, listeners and customers.

The intern will participate in assignments and contribute well-researched articles; promote readership and viewership of NMG media outlets through newsworthy articles and TV broadcasts; and enhance knowledge and exposure of colleagues through exchange of ideas, experience and training. Two fellowships available.

Fellowship Title: Early Childhood Education Fellow (IDM)

Location: Dushanbe, Tajikistan
Overseas Host Organization: Aga Khan Education Service Tajikistan
Job Description: The Early Childhood Development Program is a major initiative for AKES Tajikistan as research shows that Early Childhood Education plays a major role in the educational future of the child. AKES has developed a program incorporating elements of the British High Scope Program which emphasizes the development of the child's language skills, creativity, decision-making, social and problem-solving skills using locally accessible resources.

The Aga Khan Lycee strives to create a harmonious balance between academic demands, sporting and cultural activities and community life. The AKES mandate is to continue the pursuit of excellence in educational practice and management in diverse and challenging settings through the use of child-centred teaching methods, a special emphasis on female education and school-based teacher training.

The intern will assist in the implementation of , the Early Childhood Program using a progressive curriculum with current teaching strategies. Besides providing a valuable pre-school education program to the students enrolled in the program, the intern will be able to share current Early Childhood Education theory and practice with teachers within the program and with teachers in the broader community. The intern will also gain classroom experience as an early childhood educator implementing a new curriculum in a developing country with limited resources.

Fellowship Title: Monitoring and Evaluation, Strengthening Documentation System Intern (IDM)

Location: Kampala City, Uganda
Overseas Host Organization: AKF – Uganda and EUPEC Project
Job Description: Enhancement of Universal Primary Education and Community (EUPEC) is a participatory locally developed and designed Aga Khan Foundation School Improvement Initiative/Project (SIP). EUPEC primarily targets children in some of the most vulnerable urban and resource-poor areas in Kampala and the surrounding towns. EUPEC seeks to contribute to local and national efforts to improve the quality of primary/basic education by implementing a relevant tailor-made school improvement program based on the principles of mainstreaming, scaling-up, and sustainability.

The intern will support staff in developing effective documentation and networking to increase project visibility and promote project recognition by sharing experiences, lessons learned and best practices from implementation of this project to various partners including communities, policy and decision makers at different levels. The intern will also assist in the development of a project information system; support and mentor staff in documentation and information management; as well as cover and report project activities in the public media.

Location: Kampala City, Uganda
Overseas Host Organization: Madrasa Resource Centre - Uganda
Job Description: The Madrasa Resource Centre Uganda (MRCU) is a program of the Aga Khan Foundation. It works directly with disadvantaged urban, peri-urban, and rural communities to support the establishment of community-owned and managed pre-schools. The Aga Khan Foundation provides technical and organizational support to the program in terms of providing overall guidance and providing bridging funds for program continuity. MRC is governed by a national committee at the country level and by an MRC Regional committee at the regional level.

To support the MRC in Uganda, the intern will develop and implement a communications strategy, improve data collection and storage, and train staff to maintain effective documentation and reporting systems at both the program and community levels. Some specific activities include: improving communication in MRC Uganda through the production of case studies and articles specifically in the areas of gender, HIV/AIDS and early childhood education; and providing support in report writing, lessons learned, proposal development and effective documentation.

Fellowship Title: Documentation and Communication Officer (IDM)

Location: Stone Town, Zanzibar, Tanzania
Overseas Host Organization: Zanzibar Madrasa Resource Centre (ZMRC)
Job Description: The ZMRC mandate is to establish quality and sustainable madrasa preschools for poor communities to increase the enrolment and retention of children in school, empower women and girls, contribute to community and early childhood education, support and build the capacity of ZMRC in documenting education of girls in the Tanzanian context and improve communications in ZMRC through the production of briefs, manuals and articles specifically in the areas of gender, HIV/AIDS, and education

The intern will improve communications in ZMRC through the production of case studies and articles specifically in the areas of gender, HIV/AIDS and early childhood education. The intern will also document MRC processes, best practices, lessons learned and review and finalize curriculum support manuals while supporting and building the capacity of ZMRC in documenting education of girls in Tanzanian context.

Fellowship Title: Monitoring and Evaluation Fellow (IDM)

Location: Zanzibar Town, Tanzania
Overseas Host Organization: The Rahaleo Community Health Program (RLCHP)
Job Description: The Rahaleo Community Health Program is a project of the Aga Khan Foundation, which works to contribute to the Government’s efforts to improve health status. The Raha Leo Community Health Program (RLCHP) is a public-private partnership between the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Government of Zanzibar initiated in February 2004. Located in the periphery of Stone Town, Zanzibar, the Raha Leo second-line dispensary serves a population of over 20,000 residents in five urban communities.

The intern’s main role will be to support documentation, monitoring and evaluation (M&E) activities relating to RLCHP. As RLCHP replicates in new sites, the current M&E system will need to be strengthened and lessons learned elaborated. This will include supporting program staff to comply with the M&E system (including the performance monitoring framework) and develop their skills in monitoring and documentation. The intern will also support the strengthening of organizational systems, to support a move towards development of an independent program unit which can be contracted out by communities and the government to provide technical assistance for replication of best practices.
