FELLOWSHIP IN INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT
Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) is a non-denominational, non-profit
international development agency that promotes sustainable and equitable social
development in low-income countries in Asia and Africa. AKFC has a long history
of providing career development opportunities for youth through its
international development activities.
The Fellowship in International Development Management (IDM) program,
sponsored by AKFC in collaboration with the Canadian International Development
Agency (CIDA), is designed to develop leadership and management skills and
promote learning for outstanding young Canadians who have a desire and an
aptitude to work effectively in a global environment. The IDM program builds on
fifteen years of success in which more than 210 university graduates have
received focused study and practical experience that has enabled them to pursue
leadership positions in their chosen fields. The program, designed as a stepping
stone for careers in international development, has proven attractive to young
Canadians from a wide variety of disciplines—including law, engineering,
journalism, education, business and public administration, and development
studies—wishing to embark on global careers.
The program consists of a four-week Management Seminar in Ottawa, followed by
an eight-month work placement with a non-governmental organization in Asia or
Africa. The Management Seminar provides training in development management and
leadership, emphasizing innovative and analytical approaches, and strategic
thinking and planning. Course instruction also reinforces practical skills such
as financial management, participatory development, and results-based project
management. It should be noted that the Management Seminar aims to introduce
participants to concepts and approaches that will be useful for participants
upon return from their placements as they embark on their professional careers.
In Asia and Africa, participants will be placed with organizations working on
various aspects of development, such as health, education, livelihoods and civil
society enhancement. The program will be held between May 28, 2007 and February
28, 2008.
Each participant is expected to contribute CAD$1,000 towards the cost of the
program. Other program-related expenses, including travel to the placement,
basic food and accommodation costs, and immunization and health insurance costs,
will be covered by the program.
