FELLOWSHIP IN INTERNATIONAL MICROFINANCE AND MICROENTERPRISE

Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) is a non-denominational, non-profit international development agency that promotes sustainable and equitable social development in low-income countries in Asia and Africa. AKFC is now accepting applications for its Fellowship in International Microfinance and Microenterprise (FIMM).

The FIMM program, sponsored by AKFC in collaboration with the Canadian International Development Agency, is designed to develop skills and promote learning for outstanding young Canadians who have a desire and an aptitude to work effectively in a global environment. This program, currently in its fifth year, builds upon the highly successful Fellowship in International Development Management (IDM) that AKFC has developed for young Canadians committed to sustainable human development. Similar to the IDM program, the FIMM program will provide young Canadian professionals with an intensive four-week training program in Canada, followed by an eight-month placement with an organization involved in the microfinance/ microenterprise sector in the developing world.

The Ottawa-based training component of FIMM will provide participants with a thorough grounding in the latest microfinance/microenterprise concepts, approaches and techniques. During their eight-month placement, participants are expected to gain first-hand, practical experience while also substantively contributing to some defined area of their host organization’s work. Participants will also engage in a focused area of learning that advances their understanding of the sector, while also being of value to the work of their host organization. Upon return to Canada, participants are expected to contribute significantly to the quality of support that Canadian organizations and institutions are able to provide their partners in Canada and the developing world.

This year’s training program is planned from May 28 – June 20, 2007, with placements beginning in July 2007 and ending in February 2008.

Each participant is expected to contribute CAD$1,000 towards the cost of the program. Other program-related expenses, including travel to the placement, basic food and accommodation costs, and immunization and health insurance costs, will be covered by the program.

Eligibility Criteria - Applicants must:

  • be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants;
  • qualify as youth (19-30 years old);
  • hold, at a minimum, an Honours Bachelors degree or professional designation (Masters degree preferred);
  • demonstrate a strong interest in the field of microfinance/microenterprise;
  • not have participated in a Youth Employment Strategy internship; and
  • not be enrolled in any educational program for the duration of the Fellowship.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION TO AKFC'S INTERNSHIP PROGRAM HAS PASSED. PLEASE NOTE DUE TO THE HIGH VOLUME OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED, ONLY SHORT LISTED CANDIDATES WILL BE CONTACTED.
