YOUNG PROFESSIONALS PROGRAM IN MEDIA

Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) is a non-denominational, non-profit international development agency that promotes sustainable and equitable social and economic development in low-income countries in Asia and Africa. AKFC has a long history of providing opportunities for the career development of youth through its international development activities.

The Young Professionals Program in Media (YPM), sponsored by Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) in collaboration with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), is designed to develop leadership and management skills and promote learning for outstanding young Canadian journalists who have a desire and an aptitude to work effectively in today’s global media environment. Successful candidates will undertake an eight month placement with the Nation Media Group, in East Africa, which includes The Nation newspaper in Nairobi, the Monitor in Kampala, the East African in Dar es Salaam and several broadcast holdings.

This third cycle of the YPM program builds on AKFC’s seventeen years of success in managing overseas internship programs. Through AKFC’s Fellowships in International Development Management and International Microfinance and Microenterprise, more than 250 university graduates have received focused study and practical experience that has enabled them to pursue leadership positions in their chosen fields. The YPM program, designed as a stepping stone for careers in international media, targets young Canadian journalists —including students of print, broadcast, documentary, and internet journalism—wishing to embark on global careers.

The program consists of a preparatory session in Ottawa and orientation program overseas, followed by an eight-month work placement with the Nation Media Group in East Africa. The YPM program provides training in development management and leadership, emphasizing innovative and analytical approaches, and strategic thinking and planning. While in East Africa, participants will be exposed to elements of print media report and editorial writing, broadcast news gathering and production, and general media operations management. Specific placement terms of reference will be tailored to the skills, experience, and interest of participants. The program will be held between May 28 2007 and February 28, 2008. Up to fifteen Fellowships will be awarded for the 2007/2008 Program.

Eligibility Criteria - Applicants must:

  • be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants;
  • be between 19-30 years old;
  • demonstrate a strong interest in the field of international media; and
  • hold, at minimum, an Honours Bachelors degree or professional designation (Masters degree preferred).
