Rehabilitating communities in post-conflict Afghanistan

The Afghanistan Community Renewal Program is helping to rebuild a country devastated by decades of drought and civil conflict. Drawing upon over twenty years of experience with integrated rural support programs in neighbouring Pakistan and Tajikistan, the Afghanistan Community Renewal Program focuses on agriculture-based rural development and income-generation and micro-credit. Particular emphasis is given to providing farmers with alternatives to the poppy economy. This is integrated with health and education initiatives, especially for women and children.

The program supports the commitment made by the Aga Khan Development Network to undertake a recovery, reconstruction and long-term development program that includes agriculture-based rural development; food and seed security; rehabilitation of capital infrastructure; the provision and upgrading of health and education services from the primary to the tertiary levels; institution and capacity building - especially at the community level- and the restoration of the cultural heritage for social inclusion. AKDN's strategic programming objectives are to support the establishment of a stable modern state in Afghanistan with a pluralistic society. To that end, AKDN is working to enable returning refugees to reconstruct their lives and establish long-term, integrated development, which will enable the Afghan people to realize new opportunities and choices.
