Health and Poverty Book Launch

On March 30, Aga Khan Foundation Canada hosted the Canadian launch of Health and Poverty, Global Health Problems and Solutions with author Dr. Gijs Walraven, Director of the Aga Khan Health Services.

Drawing on twenty years working in community health in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, Dr. Walraven discussed the complex links between health and poverty in poor countries, and offered solutions, based on experience and innovation, to some of the most critical healthcare challenges of the 21st century.

In North America, we are “victims of our own success,” Dr. Walraven explained. The burden of disease has become one of opulence, and our focus is curative rather than preventative. “We need a different approach in the developing world,” he cautioned.

Improving the Quality of Education in Post-Conflict Communities

On Wednesday, March 9th, Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) and the Canadian Global Campaign for Education (CGCE) co-hosted a breakfast at the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat to discuss successful initiatives to raise the quality of education in post-conflict communities. 

Special guests for the conversation were: Dr. Hellen Inyega, Assistant Professor at the University of Nairobi, Kenya; Mr. Agostinho Mamade, Program Manager, Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique; and Mr. James Emmanuel Roberts, former Deputy Minister for Planning, Research and Development, Ministry of Education, Liberia.

Savings Group Learning Workshop

 Experts Gather to Share Research on Financial Services for the Poor

 On 27 and 28 October 2010, the Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) hosted a Savings Groups Learning Workshop at the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat. The workshop aimed to share learning on the facilitation of Savings Groups, to better understand how they respond to the poor’s needs for financial services and the value they add to the lives of their members.

The workshop was attended by 50 savings groups specialists, including representatives from donor agencies, international non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academics and the broader Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).   

The workshop was part of the Savings Groups Learning Initiative funded by The MasterCard Foundation and AKFC.
