Perspectives from Eastern Africa
Mr. Agostinho Mamade, a Program Manager with Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique, Dr. Rose Shayo, visiting professor at Carleton University’s Institute of African Studies, originally from University of Dar es Salaam; and Ms. Teresa Chiesa, Program Manager for Africa and Health Specialist with CARE Canada explored the shifting landscape of civil society in eastern Africa.
More specifically their conversation explored how civil society organizations are working at all levels –from grassroots programs to national initiatives which help the effective delivery of programs and services, particularly in the health and education sectors.
The panellists were asked to comment on how CSOs can promote stability in challenging contexts through economic and social development initiatives. They agreed that stability and sustainability rested on empowering communities to work with donors and governments as equal partners.
CSOs can act as a backbone for communities, the panellists noted; however, the people in these communities must have a say in determining priorities. “As long as there is a common vision, a shared unity is possible,” said Mr. Mamade. “They will say, 'We think we can do this.'”
