By covering these stories as a freelancer, he has defied the mainstream appetite for sensational stories and has leveraged deeper stories and unusual angles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"itemFullText\">\n<p>Participants learned about his experiences reporting on important development issues. He offered practical advice for establishing a career as an international freelance journalist.<\/p>\n<p>This event was co-presented by Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) and partner journalism schools.<\/p>\n<p>The presentation included an audience Q&amp;A.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Event details:<\/strong><br \/>\nThis event has taken place at l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 de Moncton and l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 Laval.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Valerian Mazataud<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Born in 1978, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.focuszero.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Valerian Mazataud<\/a><\/strong> is a French freelance documentary photographer based in Montreal and working with Le Devoir, La Presse, l\u2019Actualit\u00e9 and the bi-yearly magazine Nouveau Projet. He is represented by Redux Pictures in New York.<\/p>\n<p>He is mainly interested in stories relating to social justice, minorities, human rights, environment and international affairs. He has covered some major events over the past few years, including the Haitian earthquake, the drought in Africa and the Arab spring.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Mazataud now works on long term projects such as the social impact of mining on communities.
