From boardroom blues to teambuilding: Why one volunteer now looks forward to meetings

For many of us, meetings can be a drag. But for World Partnership Golf (WPG) Edmonton volunteer Fahd Mirza, his volunteer meetings are a place where the spirit of volunteering truly comes alive.

Fahd’s volunteer journey with WPG in Edmonton began three years ago organizing fundraising activities at the annual golf tournament. Since then, he has grown into his role as the team’s Communication Lead.

When asked why he volunteers, Fahd says, “It’s an amazing opportunity to support a cause that is close to my heart. Issues such as poverty have devastating repercussions on individuals, their families, and their community. We have a moral responsibility to raise the standard of living in countries of need.”

Through WPG, Fahd contributes his time and talents to a cause that rallies support for development, equips Canadians with the information and resources they need to act as informed global citizens, and creates opportunities to act locally.

“Volunteering with WPG has allowed me to gain perspective on global issues and the efforts needed to develop and implement solutions to address these issues,” he says.

What Fahd enjoys most about WPG meetings is that the volunteers share and acknowledge each other’s ideas, support one another, and make decisions together. He explains that working so collaboratively keeps the team engaged and excited.

While fighting global poverty is Fahd’s primary motivator for volunteering, he also finds it’s fun and exciting.

“Our WPG core team is a family of energetic and selfless professionals who put together a fundraising event that sponsors and golfers rave about. The team lives and breathes the values of teamwork, fun, and resiliency. Who wouldn’t want to be part of this family?!”
