SUPPORTING THE COVID-19 RESPONSE IN INDIA

Damiano Pietroni

AKF and Oxford Alumni and Friends

The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is at the forefront of the COVID-19 response in Asia and Africa and is working to provide urgent humanitarian assistance, slow the virus’s spread, care for the infected, and respond to the broad consequences of the virus.

As countries across Asia and Africa struggle with multiple waves of infection, AKDN’s ongoing response is helping to meet critical needs.

India is currently facing a particularly virulent second wave of infection, causing a surge in coronavirus cases that has overextended medical services and equipment.

In collaboration with the Oxford Alumni and Friends, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) is implementing an emergency response in the Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh, India.

This response will:

  • Introduce telemedicine to enable patients to access timely medical care.
  • Strengthen vaccine delivery sites, including a mobile vaccination van, with medical equipment, infrastructure, and personal protective equipment.
  • Connect vulnerable households to vaccine registration access and public health messages about wearing masks, handwashing, and physical distancing.
