Education at the Margins: Reaching Children in Fragile & Conflict-Affected States

February 27, 2014

“Education for children is a basic building block we cannot afford to ignore.”  – Lois Brown, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development.

Ms. Brown’s opening remarks set the stage for an informative conversation about the importance of providing education to all children, especially those living in fragile and conflict-affected states.

Following her remarks, a panel of leading figures in education took to the stage to discuss the needs and challenges facing children in difficult environments. Alice Albright, chief executive officer for the Global Partnership for Education, David Morley, president and chief executive officer for UNICEF Canada and Sharif Ghalib, senior political advisor at the Embassy of Afghanistan, engaged in conversation with an audience of over 130 guests gathered at the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat and online via webcast on February 27, 2014. The event was moderated by Diane Jacovella, assistant deputy minister, Global Issues Branch, Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development.

Topics discussed ranged from physical infrastructure to financing education and ensuring learning outcomes are met. The speakers reached consensus in noting the importance of having teachers, communities, civil society and government all work in tandem to enable safe, secure, quality education for all.
