Description
The humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan is among the worst in the world, with over half the population in dire need of humanitarian assistance. Political instability, economic vulnerability, a fragile healthcare system, food scarcity, natural disasters, and widespread malnutrition are just some of the factors threatening the immediate and long-term well-being of the Afghan people, with disproportionate impacts on women and children.
The current situation in Afghanistan has also severely impacted the mental and psychosocial well-being of the Afghan people. One in two people living in Afghanistan suffer from psychological distress, with a higher prevalence of mental health crises among women.
Leveraging long-term local partnerships and building on decades of work in these communities, this program aims to provide lifesaving humanitarian assistance, with a focus on health, nutrition, and psychosocial support in four provinces of Afghanistan. Project activities include, but are not limited to:
- Increased access to lifesaving essential medicines, medical supplies, and emergency health and psychosocial services by upgrading health facilities and working with mobile outreach teams.
- Training sessions for healthcare workers on emergency health services, nutrition support, and maternal and newborn health.
- Information sessions to increase community awareness and utilization of health services, and to enhance the capacity of communities to respond to emergencies.
