His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, 49th Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, passed away peacefully in Lisbon on February 4, 2025, aged 88, surrounded by his family. Prince Karim Aga Khan was the founder and chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network.
Aga Khan IV established the Aga Khan Foundation in 1967 to bring together human, financial, and technical resources to address the challenges faced by the poorest and most marginalized communities in the world. The Foundation operates in 18 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America.
The management, staff and volunteers of the Aga Khan Foundation offer our condolences to the family of His Highness and to the Ismaili community worldwide. On February 5, 2025, Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan V was named the 50th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, following the unsealing of the Will of his late father, Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV.
