Description
Pakistan faces some of the highest disaster risk levels in the world. It is ranked the seventh-most vulnerable country to long-term climate risks, and the eighth-most affected by climate change.
The floods in 2022 were a stark example of climate-induced natural disaster and the widespread, devastating effects on ecosystems, economies, health, livelihoods, and quality of life. An estimate one-third of the country was underwater, with 33 million people affected or displaced, 8.3 million acres of crops damaged, and over 1.1 million livestock lost. With insufficient post-flood investments and inadequate institutions resilient to climate shocks, the damage continues to profoundly impact vulnerable communities, with disproportionate impacts on women, girls, and persons with disabilities.
This project aims to address the critical challenges caused by the floods and strengthen community resilience against climate change and climate shocks for flood-affected and at-risk populations, with a particular focus on women and girls. Project activities include, but are not limited to:
- Working with community members, including school management committees and educators, to enhance gender-responsive knowledge and skills on disaster risk preparedness, climate-forward practices, resilience and response, with a focus on training women community leaders
- Training healthcare workers, first responders, healthcare professionals, and frontline workers to improve essential gender-responsive health and mental health services
- Risk-proofing and restoring productive, social, and protective infrastructure damaged by the floods, including essential water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities
- Supporting recovery efforts, such as restoring community livelihoods, agriculture, and food security, and providing opportunities for youth to access educational or professional opportunities
